William Whitfield (Bill) Shaver, III was born
16 November 1923 in Arkadelphia. the only child of William Whitfield (Whit) and Martha
Williams Shaver. Bill lived all his life in Wynne. He graduated from Wynne High
School in 1941 as Valedictorian and attended Vanderbilt University until entering the Navy
.
Bill joined the Navy on 1 July 1943. He was commissioned an Ensign on 27
June 1944 at Plattsburg, New York, after training at the University of the South
(Sewanee). He served 18 months in the Pacific area, mainly at Honolulu, as Deck officer or
Executive Officer aboard ship. He was discharged as Lt. (Jg) on 5 July 1946 at Boston,
Massachusetts.
After the war he completed his education at Vanderbilt, returned to
Wynne and engaged in real estate sales and farming, until his death in 1997. Bill is
buried at Cogbill Cemetery .
